**Unfortunately The Hoffmeister Ensemble cannot perform today due to illness. Instead respected musician/composer Alexander Campkin, together with his pupil Jane Linden, will give a recital. Jane is preparing for an exam and it may be that an informal discussion will follow the recital to hear audience feedback.

The first installment of Ozu’s so-called "Noriko trilogy", and made under the post-WW2 Allied occupation of Japan, Late Spring belongs to the type of Japanese cinema known as shomin-geki, a genre that deals with the ordinary daily lives of working class and middle class people of modern times. It follows the story of a young woman, Noriko (Hara) perfectly happy living at home with her widowed father, Shukichi (Chishû Ryû), and with no plans to marry - that is, until her aunt Masa (Haruko Sugimura) convinces Shukichi that unless he marries off his 27-year-old daughter soon, she will likely remain alone for the rest of her life. ‚Äč
